In the summer of this year, the Rügen Bäder Bahn RüBB was able to put into operation its first historic passenger carriage with disabled access.

Following successful approval by the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Commissioner for Railway Technology, the first converted type 970 passenger coach was integrated into the regular timetable in July. For CE cideon engineering, this milestone marks the successful completion of a significant project that is of particular relevance due to its history.

Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsgesellschaft Pressnitztalbahn mbH is equipping a total of three type 970 vehicles with two swivel lifts each. The aim is to enable the transport of people with reduced mobility and to improve accessibility of the Rügen BäderBahn route network.

The conversion work was carried out in accordance with the Railway Construction and Operating Regulations for Narrow Gauge Railways (ESBO), with great emphasis on preserving the existing condition, historic charm and external appearance of the vehicle. The subsystems of swivel sliding doors, swivel lifts, safety systems, controls and energy supply were integrated into the existing vehicles based on the generally accepted rules of the technology. The interior design was conceptually based on the existing vehicles. The first stages included developing a new vehicle layout, carrying out a fire risk analysis and developing a rescue concept based on this.

CE cideon engineering acted as engineering partner for Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsgesellschaft Pressnitztalbahn mbH from the very beginning and was responsible for the design, vehicle inventory, engineering, construction supervision, operating concept and approval documentation. The conversion itself was carried out by the company IntEgro, and the double-leaf swivel sliding doors were supplied by the company TER.

Four standard wheelchair spaces are now available in the converted vehicles, and the swivel lifts have a load capacity of 350kg. This step towards accessibility on the ‘Rasender Roland’ will enable many passengers to enjoy the beauty of the island of Rügen without restrictions.
